Introducing Hamburg Chiropractor Dr. Peter Karas
My mother used to tell me that when I was born she started to get headaches. Of course, the headaches weren't from me but probably the epidural they gave her in the hospital while she was having me. One of my proudest moments I've had in practice is after performing a few chiropractic adjustments to her spine, her headaches went away. Now she can't blame me for the headaches anymore.
While I was in college my major was biology with a goal of pre med/dental. I wasn't sure which way I wanted to go until I hurt my low back lifting weights in the gym. I went to a chiropractor at the suggestion of a friend and was amazed that after one adjustment my back pain was gone. After further investigation into chiropractic I decided this is for me.
After graduating as a biology major from FDU in 1977, I began my chiropractic education at New York Chiropractic College. A lot of people don't realize how intensive our chiropractic education is. We spend four years studying anatomy, human physiology, biochemistry as well as diagnosis, x-ray and chiropractic adjusting techniques. After graduating in 1981 I started in practice as an associate at the Totowa Chiropractic Center working with Dr. Anthony Amato. I gained a wealth of experience from him but after four years decided to branch out on my own. That's when I decided on Hamburg NJ for my new practice and home.
I love taking care of and watching things grow and be healthy. My patients are always surprised when they ask the girls in my office who does the gardening and takes care of the plants and they respond that it's me.
One of the hardest things to do is to find time to relax and do other things that you enjoy. My relaxation is gardening, working out in the gym and riding my motorcycle. The motorcycle passion has ended up with my office running a motorcycle benefit run for charity. In the past the proceeds have gone to Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital in Browns Mills N.J.. In the future we are going to donate to autism research as well to help great little kids like Jake, my nephew.
I have been working out in gyms and pools since I was ten years old. Swimming on teams, playing football and other sports, I have had my share of injuries. Learning a lot over the years from hands on experience as well as continuing education seminars on sports rehabilitation, I help guide my patients in rehabbing their own injuries. Eating correctly, exercising and proper rest are key elements for a healthier lifestyle.
